Attention Rural Community Local Control Committees

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai’s Broadband Deployment Advisory Committee will hold two days of meetings at FCC headquarters on Jan. 23 and 24 to consider recommendations from its working groups. The panel will hear reports on creating model codes for municipalities and states, removing state and local regulatory barriers, streamlining federal siting and fostering competitive access to broadband infrastructure. The fun begins at 9 a.m. both days, according to an FCC notice.

The implementation of 5G networks will require the installation of millions of mini-cells to provide the level of connectivity necessary for autonomous vehicles and high-resolution video services. If the cell service providers have to negotiate with every county, town, and village on the use of the right of ways and existing infrastructure implementation will be delays and costs will soar. It appears the Trump infrastructure plan for broadband is full implementation of G5 networks. Using federal regulations to remove local barriers is going to be an essential element of the Trump broadband plan. This is not going to sit well with the local control folks, who are planning to extract revenue by renting the local right-aways to the providers. Local officials will soon be firing up the NIMBY groups to challenge the FCC model codes in the courts, delaying 5G implementation across multiple communities.
